Construction cools but resilience remains in Irish sector

May marked the first dip in Irish construction activity in three months, with the AIB PMI slipping below the 50 threshold to 49.2—indicating a modest contraction. Trade uncertainty, particularly from the US, is dampening momentum, and residential and civil engineering activity both declined.

Yet the sector isn’t slowing down entirely. Commercial construction remains solid, new orders continue to rise (albeit at a slower rate), and firms are hiring at their fastest pace since January. The industry appears to be preparing for future growth, despite immediate headwinds.
