Northern Ireland civil engineering contractor GRAHAM has completed a £3.2 million wastewater treatment works for Monea village, situated outside Enniskillen, according to Construction Ireland, delivering a nature-based infrastructure upgrade for NI Water with long-term environmental and development benefits for the Fermanagh area.

Acting as principal contractor, GRAHAM led construction of the facility over two years. The system employs aerated reed beds to treat effluent, offering a low-energy alternative to conventional wastewater treatment methods with a significantly reduced environmental footprint.

The project is expected to improve water quality in the Monea River and Lower Lough Erne while providing capacity to support future residential and commercial growth in the region. Technical and project management support was provided by RPS Tetratech throughout delivery.

Contracts manager Ciaran Moohan said: "Our long-standing relationship with NI Water is built on a shared commitment to quality and environmental responsibility, and this scheme is a strong example of what can be achieved through close collaboration. Together, we've delivered a nature-based solution that meets the needs of the local community today and is designed to support future growth."

NI Water project manager Martin Armstrong said the completed facility "will support future growth and development in the area, as well as providing key environmental benefits such as enhancing the river water quality in the Monea River and Lower Lough Erne."

The scheme reflects growing momentum behind sustainable wastewater infrastructure across Northern Ireland, with nature-based treatment solutions gaining traction as a viable alternative to energy-intensive conventional systems.
