Greenlink Interconnector won Software & Electrical Engineering Project of the Year at the recently concluded Engineering Excellence Awards 2025, recognised for delivering a 504 MW high-voltage direct current transmission link between Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Capable of powering up to 380,000 homes, the project supports renewable energy exports, ensures electricity imports during low-wind periods, and provides essential grid-balancing services across both transmission systems. Its scale, environmental stewardship, and strategic contribution to decarbonisation underscore its transformative impact on energy infrastructure.
The judging panel highlighted Greenlink’s meticulous execution, stakeholder engagement, and innovation across multiple operational dimensions. Its completion on time and within budget demonstrated both technical rigour and effective project management.
“This entrant highlighted the power of delivering large-scale infrastructure that balances environmental care, safety, and stakeholder engagement. Its innovative design and contribution to energy security make it a truly award-worthy achievement,” the judges said.
The recognition underscores the rising standards within the Engineering Excellence Awards, reflecting a progression of high-achieving organisations setting benchmarks in innovation, sustainability, and leadership.
With 2025 marking a year of operational and strategic milestones, the sector builds momentum, demonstrating what ambitious engineering projects can achieve. Who will step into the spotlight in 2026 to further elevate engineering excellence across Ireland?
