Professor Brian Caulfield, Associate Professor at Trinity College Dublin, has been appointed to the judging panel for the Engineering Excellence Awards 2026, bringing a research career of considerable scale and international reach to the evaluation process.
Caulfield leads an active research group at Trinity comprising nine PhD students and six postdoctoral researchers, reflecting both the depth of his academic programme and the sustained external confidence in his work.
To date, he has secured approximately €10 million in competitive research funding and published over 200 papers across international journals and conferences. This body of output positions him among the more prolific engineering researchers working in Ireland today.
His editorial responsibilities signal the regard in which he is held by the international research community. He serves as an Editor of Transport Policy, a highly ranked international journal, and holds membership of the international editorial boards of Transportation Research Part D: Transport and Environment, Case Studies on Transport Policy, the Journal of Cycling and Micro-mobility Research, and the Journal of Transport Geography.
Taken together, these roles place him at the heart of the scholarly conversation shaping transport engineering and policy across multiple disciplines.
As a panel member, Caulfield brings to the judging process an evidence-driven perspective honed by two decades of evaluating research quality, funding applications, and academic output. These capacities translate directly into the rigorous assessment of engineering innovation and real-world impact.
The submission of entries for the Engineering Excellence Awards 2026 closes on 3 July, with the awards gala taking place on 21 October 2026 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry.
