Siemens Healthineers has officially launched a new Centre of Excellence for Immunoassay Instrument R&D in Swords, Ireland, investing over $12 million (€10 million) to enhance innovation in laboratory diagnostics.

The facility, located just north of Dublin, marks a significant expansion in the company’s medtech engineering footprint, as reported by Mass Device.

The centre is designed to develop next-generation diagnostic instruments supporting the detection of infectious diseases, cancer, and blood disorders. It houses more than 65 specialist positions in software engineering, hardware design, bioscience, data science, systems engineering, and AI. These roles collaborate globally to advance high-precision instrument design and leverage digital manufacturing and automation tools to meet growing demand for clinical diagnostics.

Patrick Grimes, global head of hardware engineering R&D for Siemens Healthineers Diagnostics, said, “For nearly 60 years, this site has delivered world-class diagnostic instruments to hospitals and laboratories globally. Now, by aligning research and development with production under one roof, we are accelerating the pace of discovery and delivery. This centre is a symbol of our commitment to shaping the future of diagnostics where science, technology, and human ingenuity come together to improve lives globally.”

The facility also benefits from a multi-million-euro training and development grant from IDA Ireland, supporting upskilling over the next three to five years across engineering, operations, and leadership roles.

Darragh O’Brien, Minister for Transport, Climate, Environment and Energy, highlighted the global reach of the innovations developed in Ireland, while Michael Lohan, CEO of IDA Ireland, noted the centre reinforces Ireland’s position as a hub for advanced manufacturing and R&D.
