Uisce Éireann has completed a €2 million engineering upgrade to water and wastewater infrastructure in Skerries, Co. Dublin, creating capacity for up to 900 additional homes. The project strengthens the resilience and reliability of water and wastewater services for households, businesses and community facilities across the coastal town, one of several urban centres targeted under the utility's national engineering investment programme.

The scheme involved upgrading approximately 540 metres of water mains and more than 200 metres of gravity sewer, delivered under Uisce Éireann's national Growth and Development Programme. The works were carried out by GMC Utilities Group on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

The upgrade required a phased approach to minimise disruption, with a stop/go traffic management system used on Shenick Road during construction. Customers were given advance notice ahead of any planned water interruptions as the engineering works progressed.

Uisce Éireann's Michael McManus said: "We're delighted to see this important project completed for Skerries. This investment will help support the town's continued growth while ensuring local homes and businesses can continue to rely on secure and dependable water and wastewater services."

McManus added: "Together, these upgrades represent a significant investment in the future of Skerries, helping to unlock capacity for new homes while strengthening essential services for the local community." He said the project reflected a broader approach of "planning for the future while supporting communities today."

The structural driver is capital investment in water infrastructure tied directly to housing delivery, with Uisce Éireann's Growth and Development Programme targeting capacity upgrades across dozens of Irish settlements to unlock new home construction. The Skerries scheme forms part of this wider programme of engineering works nationwide.

For the sector, the Skerries upgrade illustrates the scale of civil and public health engineering required to keep pace with Ireland's housing targets, with water mains and gravity sewer renewals increasingly delivered alongside new residential development.
