Garrett Advancing Motion, a leading advanced manufacturing firm in Waterford city, has confirmed a voluntary redundancy plan affecting 36 of its 172 staff. The plan, scheduled for implementation in the first half of 2026, comes as the company adapts its strategy to remain competitive and meet customer commitments.
Situated at Unit 411, IDA Industrial Estate on Cork Road, Garrett specialises in cutting-edge technology for turbo, hybrid and electrified applications, delivering solutions that improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. The company has been a long-standing employer in Waterford, with many employees contributing decades of service.
A company spokesperson emphasised that the firm is dedicated to supporting affected employees and will comply with all local regulations during the process. “We continuously evaluate the market and adapt our strategy to remain competitive and meet our commitments to customers,” the spokesperson said.
Local representatives have voiced concern over the announcement. SF Cllr Conor McGuinness and SF TD David Cullinane described the move as a source of “real distress and uncertainty” for staff and families, particularly in the run-up to the festive season. They urged Garrett to provide clarity, engage openly with employees and outline measures to protect jobs at the facility, stressing the wider economic impact on Waterford.
While voluntary, the redundancies mark a significant adjustment for a company that has been a cornerstone of the local workforce for decades. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges facing advanced manufacturing sectors in balancing operational efficiency with workforce stability.
