A transformative stretch of Somerset’s A303 has taken top honours at this year’s Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West Engineering Awards, spotlighting a major leap in UK transport infrastructure delivery. The £155 million A303 Sparkford to Ilchester dualling scheme, delivered by Galliford Try for National Highways, secured the prestigious ‘Showcase Award’—the evening’s highest accolade—for its exceptional engineering execution and regional impact.

Spanning 3.5 miles, the upgrade converts one of the South West’s most congested single carriageways into a dual route designed to streamline connectivity between the South East and South West. The project encompasses three new junctions, two major structures, and extensive earthworks aimed at easing congestion and improving journey reliability. It has been hailed as a “landmark achievement” by the judges, demonstrating the very best in technical innovation, collaboration, and sustainability.

For every £1 invested, the project is forecast to generate more than £3 in long-term benefits, driven by enhanced travel efficiency, reduced journey times, and improved accessibility for both freight and passenger transport. The upgrade also supports regional economic growth by strengthening a key trade and logistics corridor that links business hubs, ports, and tourism routes across the South West.

Miranda Housden, regional director at ICE South West, praised the project for its engineering excellence and meaningful community engagement. She emphasised that the winning initiatives this year reflect a “vibrant and resilient industry,” one that values both technical precision and social impact.

The A303 Sparkford to Ilchester scheme sets a new benchmark for future UK infrastructure projects, illustrating how strategic investment and collaboration can deliver enduring value for business, transport, and local communities alike.
