Irvine-based engineering firm Booth Welsh has transitioned to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT), safeguarding the company’s long-term future and securing the jobs of its 300-plus workforce. The shift, described as a “natural evolution” by CEO Martin Welsh, strengthens the company’s commitment to its people and its community-driven values.
Founded in 1989, Booth Welsh has long been recognised for its collaborative culture and strong employee focus. The transition to an EOT ensures that the business will continue to be operated in the best interests of its employees while maintaining strategic stability. The existing leadership team, including Welsh, will remain in their current roles, ensuring continuity as the company moves into this new chapter.
Mark Lee, a quantity surveyor with Booth Welsh, has been appointed as trustee director on the EOT, representing the employees’ interests. He said the move marks an exciting phase for both current and future staff, ensuring shared purpose and long-term benefits tied to the company’s success.
The transition has also drawn praise from North Ayrshire Council, which commended Booth Welsh for aligning with its Community Wealth Building strategy — an initiative aimed at retaining economic value and opportunities within the local area. Council leader Marie Burns noted that the shift not only empowers employees but also strengthens local economic resilience.
Booth Welsh’s employee ownership transition reinforces its roots in Ayrshire while maintaining its strong community partnerships. The company continues to collaborate on regional initiatives such as the EQUAL Specialist Employability Support programme and the Digital Process Manufacturing Centre at i3 in Irvine, reflecting its ongoing investment in innovation and workforce development.
See how Booth Welsh’s new ownership model is shaping a resilient future for engineering and local prosperity.
